SkyCross Introduces Wireless Industry's First Tri-Band High Gain Antenna for Wireless LAN Applications

Antenna Bridges The Gap Between 2.4 GHz - And 5 GHz-Based WLAN Applications; Provides Complete Coverage Over Both Frequency Bands In A 3mm Height Package

MELBOURNE, Florida, March 25, 2002 - SkyCross, a leading developer of advanced wireless antenna solutions, introduced the wireless industry's first and only 2.45/5.1-5.9 GHz embedded, high gain antenna. The antenna bridges the gap between 2.4 GHz- and 5 GHz-based WLAN applications by providing complete coverage over all frequency bands designated for WLAN throughout the world.

WLAN applications are divided into those that operate in the 2.4 GHz band (2.4-2.5 GHz), such as 802.11b/g, HomeRF and Bluetooth, and those that operate in the 5 GHz band (5.1-5.9 GHz), such as 802.11a, HiSWANa and HiperLAN2. Current WLAN antennas are limited in the broadness of their coverage and are designed to cover portions of either the 2.4 or the 5 GHz band-but not both. SkyCross' new antenna provides complete coverage over the multiple frequency bands designated for WLAN applications.

In addition, thanks to SkyCross' patented Meander Line Antenna technology, the 2.45/5.1-5.9 GHz antenna only requires a 3mm height standoff from the underlying ground plane. This profile allows easy integration into today's very slim wireless devices.

"Our antenna addresses one of the most crucial issues in WLAN design-multiple transmission standards," said CEO of SkyCross. "We developed the 2.45/5.1-5.9 GHz antenna as a result of the feedback we were hearing from WLAN designers. They wanted a very low profile antenna that could operate over a very wide band of spectrum and standards. This antenna more than meets these needs."

SkyCross' new antenna provides superior efficiency and gain directivity in a small, embedded package.

Key specifications of the antenna include:

  • Frequency range: 2.4 - 2.5 and 5.1 - 5 .9 GHz
  • Dimensions: 23mm x 19mm x 0.5mm (requires 3mm
    standoff above ground plane)
  • Peak Gain: +1.5dBi in lower band, +5.0 dBi in upper bands
  • Transmissions standards operability: IEEE 802.11b/g, Bluetooth,
  • HomeRF, IEEE 802.11a, ETSI HiperLAN2, and MMAC HiSWANa

"Wireless interface capability is fast becoming a standard element for laptops and PDAs," said VP of engineering for SkyCross. "Soon, WLAN capability will migrate to the motherboard and be included with every unit sold, whether utilized or not. This antenna allows OEMs the flexibility to design into their systems one antenna that works with all possible frequency standards."

About SkyCross
SkyCross is a leading developer of next-generation RF technology for mobile and fixed wireless telecommunications, telematics, satellite, and mobile computing markets. SkyCross' antenna solutions are based on patented Meander Line Antenna technology that allows engineers to design high performance, multi-mode, multi-frequency antennas that can be hidden inside a mobile casing, have a very low radiation profile, and offer much better gain characteristics over existing solutions. Typical applications for the antennas include handsets, laptop computers, PDAs, automobiles, household electronics and base stations. For details, please visit www.skycross.com.
