SkyCross Introduces Wireless Industry's
First 3.1-6.0 GHz Compact Antenna for Commercial Ultra Wideband
Applications
Antenna Opens The Door For Rapid Adoption
of Ultra Wideband
Technology
MELBOURNE, Florida, June 26, 2002 SkyCross, a leading developer
of advanced wireless antenna solutions, introduced the wireless
industry's first 3.1–6.0 GHz embedded, high gain antenna
for commercial applications. The antenna effectively addresses
the challenging RF coverage demands for Ultra Wideband (UWB) applications
such as ground penetrating radar; in–wall and through–wall
imaging; and medical, surveillance and high speed communications
systems.
UWB technology, which was approved earlier this year by the Federal
Communications Commission, can be used for a variety of wireless
applications, particularly the short-range high-speed data transmissions
needed for wireless, broadband access to the Internet. Unlike traditional
wireless systems, which operate over a static frequency band, UWB
devices emit pulses of radio energy, up to 1 billion per second,
over a wide range of frequencies. As a result of these characteristics,
UWB devices can detect and measure the position of objects more
accurately than traditional technology and can penetrate walls
more easily. In addition, UWB signals run at high speeds and low
power levels.
"The features that make UWB such an exciting and promising
technology-transmission of data at high speeds, low power, and
highly secure transmissions-are the same features that make the
RF requirements so demanding and challenging from an antenna perspective,"said
CEO of SkyCross. "Traditional antenna technology just cannot
provide adequate performance for the pulsing nature and large frequency
span of the UWB signal. The SkyCross antenna removes this RF barrier
for device-makers and will ultimately help lead the industry to
a rapid adoption of this new technology."
Key elements of SkyCross'
Ultra Wideband antenna include:
- VSWR of 2:1 or better over the
entire 3.1-6.0 GHz range
- Linear phase response across frequency
band
- Small and compact, designed for low cost consumer applications
SkyCross' embedded, high performance antenna designs are based
on patented Meander Line Antenna (MLA) technology. MLA was originally
developed for the U.S. military, which has been employing UWB technology
for the past decade. In addition, the company is a member of the
Ultra Wideband Working Group-an association of companies, individuals,
governing officials and regulators whose common goal is the development
and industry acceptance of UWB technology. About SkyCross
SkyCross is a leading developer of next-generation
RF technology for mobile and fixed wireless telecommunications,
telematics, satellite, and mobile computing markets. SkyCross'
antenna solutions are based on patented Meander Line Antenna
technology that allows engineers to design high performance,
multi-mode, multi-frequency antennas that can be hidden inside
a mobile casing, have a very low radiation profile, and offer
much better gain characteristics over existing solutions. Typical
applications for the antennas include handsets, laptop computers,
PDAs, automobiles, household electronics and base stations.
