Integrated WiMAX Solution from Beceem and SkyCross Achieves Highest Performance in Field Tests
SANTA CLARA, California, VIERA, Florida – February 10, 2009 —Beceem Communications, a leading developer of mobile WiMAX chips, and SkyCross, a global antenna solutions company, today announced an end-to-end mobile WiMAX modem reference design for USB dongles and handhelds that achieved the highest system performance in field tests. The tests measured the maximum MIMO throughput of WiMAX modems using the Beceem 65 nm single-chip BCSM250 reference design in combination with a variety of different antennas such as PCB antennas, ceramic chips, and the SkyCross iMAT antenna. The testing confirmed that the antenna is a key component to the overall system throughput, and the iMAT antenna yielded the highest throughput on average.
The WIMAX standard supports MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) operation, meaning each device must include two antennas. Antenna element placement and interference issues can make this a tricky engineering challenge in small form factor mobile devices. iMAT is well suited for MIMO because it enables a single structure to behave like multiple high-performance antennas. Bundling Beceem chipsets with SkyCross iMAT antennas provides superior performance while shortening and simplifying the design process to reduce time to market and associated costs.
“The solution from Beceem and SkyCross sets an industry benchmark for overall system performance,” said Tim Towell, Director of Network Technology at Clearwire. “When it comes to the mobile WiMAX modem we cannot afford to leave valuable performance on the table. The client device advancements enabled by the Beceem/SkyCross reference design helps to improve data rates and signal reception, which is crucial during the early mobile WiMAX adoption period.”
“SkyCross is pleased that it was able to work with Beceem to demonstrate the performance advantages of iMAT to Clearwire,” said Joe Gifford, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at SkyCross. “By combining SkyCross iMAT antennas with Beceem chips, device makers can now offer an optimal solution to service providers like Clearwire so their end customers can enjoy the 4G WiMAX experience at its fullest potential.”
“Having worked with all the leading Mobile WiMAX operators for many years now we know that optimal antenna characteristics are essential to developing a WiMAX device that does not compromise the performance of our chips,” said Lars Johnsson, Vice President of Business Development at Beceem. “The collaboration with SkyCross is an example of how Beceem is continuously working with industry leaders to enhance and simplify our reference designs to the point where highest performance is assured.”
The solutions from Beceem and SkyCross are widely recognized in the industry. Both companies have won Fierce15 awards from FierceWireless and have appeared in a number of successful WiMAX devices including the first set of products to be certified by the WiMAX ForumŽ and the first devices offered by Sprint XOHM for the Baltimore launch.
