"There's only one part of a radio that touches the medium upon which the radio operates, and that's the antenna...Great antenna, and there's a much better chance that the rest of the radio can meet specification under a wide variety of operating conditions."

Wireless device design is complicated, iterative, and time consuming. The design for every wireless device is model-specific. Manufacturers must design devices that perform well on multiple frequency bands and networks—even as power-consuming features, such as cameras, music players, and navigation are added.

SkyCross meets this multifaceted engineering challenge with versatile, next-generation RF solutions that provide wireless connectivity for nearly any device.

Key Benefits

Multi-band/mode operations

As features are added to mobile devices, the antenna must cover more frequency bands to support the services. The frequency bands ultimately drive the antenna design; the lower frequencies traditionally require larger antennas. Broadband, multi-band, or tunable antennas from SkyCross can cover wide bandwidths using a single structure, therefore simplifying device design for manufacturers. Examples of supported services:

Voice/Data: CDMA/GSM 800, 900, 1800, 1900, 2100 MHz • Bluetooth • WiMAX • 802.11a/b/g/n • AWS 700 MHz bands

Video: DVB-T/H • DVB-S/H • S-DMB • CMMB

And More: GPS • Near field communications (RFID)

Low Power Consumption

Research shows that improvements in power added efficiency (PAE) translates nearly one for one into improved battery life. Therefore, 10% improvement in PAE translates to nearly 10% improvement in battery life. SkyCross improves PAE by offering better matching and a higher level of integration among elements.

In addition, efficient antennas also improve device and network performance. End users enjoy a better signal even when the nearest tower or base unit is far away. This reduces dropped wireless connections and supports fast data transfer for high definition video or music, and more. Network operators can offer optimized performance without any infrastructure investment. A greater number of efficient devices on a network improves the capacity and bandwidth of the entire system.

Small Size for Sleek Devices

Historically, small antennas offered performance values equivalent to their size. Antenna technology from SkyCross is not tied to a particular shape or size. It can be manipulated to fill the available volume, giving device manufacturers the freedom to design sleek devices. SkyCross is a leader in maximizing antenna performance in a given space.

High Isolation for Multi-Antenna Applications

Many next-generation protocols including HSxPA, WiMAX, and LTE require multiple antennas for diversity or MIMO. The advantage to using multiple antennas is to achieve higher link gain leading to faster data rates, increased network capacity, and better reliability.
, Isolated Mode Antenna Technology, from SkyCross enables a single antenna element to behave like multiple, highly isolated antennas.

Large Patent Portfolio

The SkyCross patent portfolio is very broad—spanning the entire design, development, and manufacturing process. With dozens of patents granted or pending worldwide, SkyCross sets an industry benchmark in creating and developing technologies for antenna solutions. Further, SkyCross is focused solely on wireless and has a clear strategic roadmap for future RF solutions.

The company’s early RF solutions are based on patented Meander Line Antenna (MLA) technology developed in the Information and Electronic Warfare Systems unit of BAE Systems, formerly Sanders (a Lockheed Martin Company). The MLA approach was originally designed for military applications where unobtrusive, high performance antennas are required for both satellite and terrestrial communications. MLA technology enables engineers to design ultra broadband antennas operating on a variety of frequencies and in multiple modes. In 2000, SkyCross obtained rights to use this technology to design and manufacture products for commercial customers.

Since that time, the highly trained scientists and engineers at SkyCross have continued to develop MLA technology as well as new technology such as iMAT, dramatically expanding the company’s intellectual property and providing state-of-the-art antenna products.

Proven Results

SkyCross technology is proven in devices across all wireless categories—from innovative earphones for music players to mobile TV handsets and multifunction mobile phones. With millions of antennas sold around the world, SkyCross antennas consistently meet requirements of leading device manufacturers and service providers.
